A Multiple World Record sailor, Alex has raced around the world at the highest level for many years. He is most recently back from spending an amazing 75 days alone at sea, covering over 14,500 nautical miles, non-stop from Northern France, through the heat of the tropics and the storms of the Southern Ocean to Australia.
Alex Alley – World Record Yachtsman and Adventure Psychology Expert
During this challenging trip he had to deal with broken auto pilots, the day-to-day running of a high performance yacht in challenging conditions, and making the very difficult decision to head to Australia after damage to the mast which meant he couldn’t continue on this record attempt.
Whilst hugely disappointing, it was another immense adventure, bringing out the very best in the human spirit to cope when things aren’t going your way.
“Alex is one of those rare people who is made up of the ‘right stuff”

Dare to Dream
But what he did have was enthusiasm and determination by the bucket load. His never-ending quest to be the best at what he did drove him on to not only represent his country but to set eight sailing records.
Little did he know as a child, when his father bought him a small wooden sailing dinghy to keep him out of trouble, that it would set his life on such a trajectory.

You are the Skipper. How would you prepare for this disaster?
You are in the middle of the Southern Ocean; three crew down. It’s Christmas Day and your boat is 2000 miles behind the rest of the fleet. There is still a month to go before dry land.
How do you motivate your crew?
The Global Challenge Teams for 2004/5 have been announced at the London Excel Boat Show. 15 amateur volunteers are looking to you for leadership.
What do you do to turn them into a high performing team before the race starts in ten months time?
BOAT to BOARDROOM uses the extreme case study of the 2004/5 Global Challenge round the world yacht race to demonstrate Leadership and Teamwork in action. Real life learnings are intelligently drawn out and translated into practical tools and lessons that can be used in everyday business.
